Same Day AC Repair, Built for Heat Wave Season
July and August are when Rhode Island air conditioners fail in numbers: sustained heat, heavy humidity off Narragansett Bay, and systems running 12 plus hours a day expose every weak part at once. Our response is built for exactly that crunch:
- 24/7 emergency hotline with live answering, never a machine at 11pm
- Stocked trucks carrying the capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and refrigerant that cause most summer failures, so the majority of repairs finish in a single visit
- All makes and models, from out of business manufacturers to today’s state of the art units
- Upfront pricing before any work begins, no surprises added to a stressful day
- Priority scheduling for Membership Program holders, who also receive $100 off any repair throughout the year
For after hours breakdowns of any kind, our emergency HVAC repair line covers cooling, heating, plumbing, and electrical in one call.
The Summer Failures We Fix Most
Rhode Island’s coastal climate produces a predictable list of breakdowns. Our technicians repair all of them daily through the season:
- Failed capacitors and contactors. The most common heat wave casualty. The system hums but the fan or compressor never starts.
- Refrigerant leaks. The AC runs constantly but blows warm or mildly cool air, and bills spike.
- Frozen evaporator coils. Ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, usually from airflow restriction or low refrigerant.
- Condenser fan motor failures. The outdoor unit can’t shed heat, then shuts down on its own safety limit.
- Clogged condensate drains. Water pooling near the air handler, sometimes tripping a float switch that stops the whole system.
- Compressor failures. The big one, most common in aging systems pushed through sustained heat.
- Thermostat faults. The system ignores its settings, short cycles, or refuses to start at all.
Salt air corrosion damage. A shoreline specific problem in Newport, Jamestown, Little Compton, and other coastal communities, where corroded coils and connections fail years early.

Before You Call: A 5 Minute Check
Sometimes the fix is simple, and we would rather save you a service fee than collect one. Run through these first:
- Thermostat. Set to COOL, temperature below the room reading, fresh batteries if it takes them.
- Breaker panel. A tripped breaker for the condenser or air handler is a common heat wave event. Reset it once; if it trips again, stop and call, that is an electrical fault. Repeated AC breaker trips can also signal a panel problem our circuit breaker and rewiring electricians should look at.
- Filter. A fully clogged filter can freeze the system. If it is gray and matted, replace it.
- Outdoor unit. Confirm it is running and not buried in cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, or debris. Keep two feet of clearance.
- Ice. If you see ice anywhere, turn the system off and let it thaw before the visit. Running it frozen risks compressor damage.
Still down after those five? It is a repair. Call 401-234-2337 and we will get a technician moving.
Why Timely AC Repair Saves Money
Ignoring a struggling AC or delaying repair compounds the damage:
- Energy waste. A failing system draws more power for less cooling, inflating every bill it survives.
- Uneven cooling. Some rooms comfortable, others unbearable, with the system straining to close a gap it can’t.
- Cascade damage. A $30 capacitor left to fail can take a $2,000 compressor with it.
- Total breakdown. The end state is a dead system in peak season, when replacement lead times and prices are at their worst.
A repair call in June is almost always cheaper than an emergency in August. And once your system is healthy again, an annual AC service visit or the bundled inspection and $99 tune up keeps it that way; the tune up special runs through 6/30/26 on our specials page.
When Repair Stops Making Sense
We fix systems whenever fixing is the right answer. Sometimes it isn’t: R-22 refrigerant, a failed compressor in a 17 year old unit, corrosion beyond recovery. When that’s the situation we say so plainly and lay out the options, never a push toward an unnecessary purchase.
- AC installation estimates are always free
- Heat pumps deliver high efficiency cooling now and heating in winter, with incentives through Clean Heat Rhode Island, federal credits in our IRA FAQ, and offers on our rebates page
- Ductless mini splits and high velocity systems solve cooling for historic homes without ductwork, and we make our own ductwork when ducts are the answer
- Flexible financing spreads the cost of a replacement you didn’t plan for
AC Repair FAQ
-
How fast can you get here during a heat wave?
We run a 24/7 emergency hotline with live answering and dispatch as fast as the schedule physically allows, with same day service the goal. Membership holders receive priority over non agreement callers, which matters most in July.
-
Do you charge extra for nights and weekends?
Emergency service is available around the clock. Pricing is always presented upfront before work begins, so you approve the cost knowing exactly what it covers.
-
Can you fix my brand of AC?
Yes.
We work on all makes and models, from manufacturers that no longer exist to current high efficiency equipment, including mini splits and heat pumps. As a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor and Fujitsu Elite Contractor we hold the highest factory certifications for ductless equipment.
-
My AC is running but the house won’t cool. Is that a repair?
Usually, yes.
Constant running with weak cooling typically means low refrigerant, a dirty or failing coil, or a system losing capacity. It also burns money every hour it continues. Worth a call before the next hot stretch
-
Is it safe to keep running an AC that’s making noise?
Grinding, screeching, or banging means stop: those sounds usually indicate a motor or compressor eating itself, and continuing to run multiplies the damage.
Clicking or buzzing at startup is also worth a prompt call but is less likely to be destructive minute to minute.
-
How do I keep the house livable while I wait?
Close blinds on sun facing windows, run ceiling fans counterclockwise, avoid the oven, and keep windows shut while humidity is high outside. Our energy saving tips page covers more. If anyone in the home is heat vulnerable, say so when you call; it affects how we triage.
-
Will a repair tonight stop it happening again?
The repair fixes the fault. Preventing the next one is what annual AC service is for, and most summer emergencies we see would have been caught by a spring inspection. Many customers book the tune up on the spot after a repair visit.
