What a Ductless Mini Split Actually Is
A small outdoor condenser connects to one or more slim indoor units through a conduit about three inches wide. No ducts, no torn open walls or ceilings, no lost closet space. Each indoor unit cools (and heats) its own zone independently, controlled by its own remote or a WiFi thermostat. Installation for a single zone often takes hours, not days, and a multi zone system for a whole house typically finishes in a day.
Why Mini Splits Fit Older and Historic Rhode Island Homes

Can a mini split really cool a whole house?
Yes, with a multi zone system: one outdoor unit driving up to several indoor heads, each its own zone. For larger homes we sometimes combine systems. The load calculation during the free estimate determines the layout.

How long does installation take?
A single zone often installs in a few hours. Multi zone whole house systems typically finish in a day, occasionally a day and a half for complex layouts. No demolition, no ductwork construction.

Do mini splits work in winter too?
Modern cold climate models heat efficiently well below freezing, which is why they qualify for Clean Heat Rhode Island incentives. Many of our customers install for summer cooling and end up cutting their winter heating bills too.

Are they expensive to run?
The opposite.

Will the indoor units ruin the look of my historic home?
Indoor heads mount high on walls, recess into ceilings, or hide in low profile floor consoles. They are dramatically less visible than window units, and nothing about the home’s structure changes. The three inch conduit opening is the entire footprint.

What maintenance do they need?
Filter cleaning you can do yourself, plus professional service once a year (twice if used for heating) to clean coils, check refrigerant, and inspect the outdoor unit. Coastal homes benefit most from the professional cadence because of salt air.
